The layout is based on
a former goods yard near to Waverley station in Edinburgh. Railway
activity at the site began in the 1830s, but the model depicts the situation in
the 1950s and 60s, by which time all passenger traffic along the line had
ceased, with just the last remnants of freight, which itself was axed in 1968.
